Exploration Geology Superintendent
A bachelor’s degree in Geology or related program, with five or more years of related experience and/or training, is required. Experience in metals exploration is necessary, as is a record of measurable and documented results. Two or more years of supervisory/contract management experience is desired. Candidates must be proficient with computer/software including experience with GIS software (preferably ArcGIS and/or Geosoft Target), geologic modeling software (preferably DataMine), and Geologic databases (AcQuire). Located in southwest Washington State, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest encompasses 1,368,300 acres and includes the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument established by Congress in 1982.

The USDA Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, intends to acquire by contract stream restoration activities designed to improve fish habitat. The work includes logging and hauling trees, with a minimum length of 50 feet, to be used in the installation of approximately 36 log clusters comprised of roughly 953 logs. The structures will be designed to create scour pools in Clear Creek.

Sad News of Jim Taranik

Dear Colleagues,

I am saddened to inform you that Dr. James Taranik died yesterday. Jim’s passing is a great loss to the University community. Jim was a respected scholar, educator and academic administrator.

Jim served as President of the Desert Research Institute, Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, and Director of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering. Jim was a Regent’s Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering and held the Arthur Brandt Chair of Geophysics. Jim was planning to retire from the University of Nevada, Reno after twenty-nine years of service to the Nevada System of Higher Education on June 30. Jim’s passing will be felt throughout our community.

The FY12 funding will be distributed among the appropriation accounts as follows:

•$2.314 billion for Operation and Maintenance

•$1.48 billion for Construction

•$210 million for Mississippi River and Tributaries

•$196 million for the Regulatory Program

•$185 million for Expenses

•$109 million for the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program

•$104 million for Investigations

•$27 million for Flood Control and Coastal Emergencies

•$6 million for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works
